Woven vs. Knitted Speaker Fabrics — What's the Difference?

Updated: 11 hours ago

Speaker grille fabrics are manufactured using one of two fundamental construction methods: weaving or knitting. Each produces a different structure with distinct acoustic, aesthetic, and functional properties.

How Woven Fabrics Are Constructed

Woven fabrics are made by interlacing two sets of yarns — warp and weft — at right angles. This produces a dimensionally stable structure that holds its shape well and resists stretching. RC Textile's DoubleDyed and Eco-Friendly lines use woven construction for products where shape retention and surface uniformity are priorities.

How Knitted Fabrics Are Constructed

Knitted fabrics are formed by interlocking loops of yarn, giving them inherent stretch and recovery. This is an advantage when the fabric needs to conform to curved speaker enclosures. Our PremiumKnitted line is designed for exactly this use case.

Durability and Snagging

Woven fabrics tend to be more resistant to snagging since the interlaced structure holds individual yarns firmly in place. RC Textile tests and rates all knitted products for snagging resistance before delivery. The right choice depends on your enclosure geometry, acoustic targets, and aesthetic requirements.
