What Does GSM Mean for Speaker Grille Fabric?

GSM stands for grams per square meter and is the standard unit for measuring fabric weight. It's a simple number with a big impact on speaker performance and durability.
Low GSM: Better Transparency, Less Structure
Lighter fabrics (lower GSM) typically allow sound to pass through more freely, which is ideal for maintaining acoustic transparency. However, very light fabrics may lack the stiffness to hold their shape over a large grille and can be more prone to damage.
High GSM: More Durability, More Attenuation
Heavier fabrics offer better protection and structural stability — better suited for portable or outdoor speakers where durability is a priority. The trade-off is that denser fabrics can attenuate higher frequencies more noticeably.
Finding the Right Balance
Most premium consumer speaker brands target 80–200 GSM depending on the speaker type. RC Textile publishes GSM values for all products alongside airflow and thickness measurements, so you can make data-driven sourcing decisions. Always look at GSM alongside airflow rating — GSM alone doesn't tell the full acoustic story.
